Local Towns and Villages

The Isle of Sheppey is a popular tourist resort which doubles its population in the summer thanks to visitors to Leysdown from all over the country, particularly from London. Sheerness, in the north-west corner, has received the accolade of the European Blue Flag Award. The Isle of Sheppey is predominantly rural, containing the largest area of wetlands in the UK. Derek has campaigned hard for a new £100 million bridge to the Island which opened in July 2006. It has provided the first ever permanent access to the Isle of Sheppey across that region. The island also contains the docks at Sheerness, the fifth busiest port in the country.

Sittingbourne has become a commuter town with a busy railway station. It is the administrative centre of Swale and home to much industrial growth, particularly in recent years with the opening of Eurolink Industrial Estate and the development of the Kent Science Park. Sittingbourne and the surrounding villages were once reliant on paper mills that produced a significant amount of the UK's paper.
